Non-Metal Dentistry Treatments
Why should I prefer aesthetic filling instead of metal (amalgam) filling?
In line with the development of dental technology, patient follow-up researches and increased patient expectations, metal / amalgam fillings that are used before, have now been replaced by aesthetic fillings.
Amalgam fillings do not provide full consolidation with the teeth. They will degrade and wear in time. Ingredients such as amalgam powder and mercury are incorporated into the body in small amounts. Also their color and appearance is not aesthetical. For all these reasons, aesthetic fillers, which are both healthier and have a much longer life, have become widespread.
According to material, aesthetic fillings can be divided into two as composite based and porcelain based fillings. According to the construction technique, they are named as inlay, onlay andoverlay.
What is Inlay & Onlay?
Porcelain fillings are named according to their application style on the tooth. Inlay filling is done in cases where the material loss is low, and onlay filling is done in cases where it is relatively more.
What are the advantages of Inlay – Onlay?
Inlay – Onlay. Prior to filling, the decay in the tooth are cleaned and the cavity is measured with precision methods. According to these measurements, the porcelain filling material which is prepared externally adjusts with the teeth, gums and neighboring teeth with utmost naturality. Their durability is top level. All surfaces have smooth structure because they have better polishing properties.
What is Zirconium?
It is an aesthetic and durable porcelain type, which is used as a base material in ceramics without metal support. Zirconium-supported ceramic restorations are as durable as metal-supported ceramic restorations, which allows for more aesthetic restorations.
It is possible to obtain more aesthetic results than metal supported ceramics. In addition, porcelain has a very good compatibility with the tissues and enables the restorations to be used healthily for many years. In the base, using porcelain instead of metal, allows light permeability which procures natural prostheses.
By means of zirconium supported ceramics, the purplish discolorations especially on the neck of the teeth, formed by metal supported ceramics, are prevented. Especially in individuals with metal allergies, the use of zirconium will solve this problem because of its anti-allergic properties.
What is E-max?
Porcelain laminate is a type of ceramic formed from compressed glass particles. E-max is the application of the same material as dental veneers. It can be applied in advanced laboratories and clinics since it requires high level technical competence.
E-max vaneers are more aesthetic than zirconium vaneers. Because zirconium vaneers have a bottom layer and a top layer, as zirconium and porcelain. In contrast, E-max is composed of a single porcelain layer. When this is applied this makes the tooth look more aesthetic.
E-max vaneers are more aesthetic and durable when applied on a single tooth. It adheres to the tooth better. However, since they cannot be used in bridge treatments, zirconium vaneers give the best results in bridge applications.
E-max coatings are the best treatment in the appropriate cases.
